There's a photo on someone's wall right now that means everything to them - and when it was taken, it was just a regular morning with their dog. That's the thing about photographs. You don't always know, in the moment, that you're creating something you'll hold onto forever. But sometimes life reminds you, in the hardest way, just how much those images matter.
The Session That Changed How I Think About "Getting Around to It"
A couple of years ago, we had a rare snow here in the Outer Banks. I put out a call for dogs to photograph in the snow - because, honestly, dogs in snow? Come on. One of the dogs who came out that week was a gorgeous German Shepherd named Tucker, who I'd photographed before. Tucker was in his element, and we got some beautiful shots.
A few months later, Tucker passed away unexpectedly.
His owner reached out and told me that those snowy photos had become his end-of-life photos, and that they meant so much more now than she could have imagined when we were out there in the cold together.
I think about Tucker a lot. I also think about Brutus - my own sweet boy, who we lost very suddenly years ago. When people are on the fence about booking a session, both of them come to mind. I never want to be morbid about it (photo sessions should be fun!), but I can't stress this enough: get the photos now. You just never know.

What Makes a Memorial Portrait Actually Meaningful
There's a misconception that commissioning a pet portrait as a gift - or as a memorial keepsake - has to feel heavy or sad. It really doesn't. All of my sessions are about the dogs. Letting them be them. Giving them a good morning or evening and ALLLLL the treats.
The goal is always to create a memory you can hold in your hands or hang on your wall. I like to say that photography is like time travel. The right photo can put you right back in that place and time - you can almost smell it, almost hear it. But most of all, you remember the feeling. That's what I'm chasing in every session. A moment that, every time you see it on the wall or hold the album in your hands, you remember that feeling. Maybe even shed a tear of laughter.
That's what separates a meaningful portrait from something that's just decorative.

How I Approach Sessions That Carry More Weight
When a session is tied to a senior dog - maybe their last trip to the beach, or a chapter that feels like it's winding down - I bring a different kind of energy. A lot more calm. A lot more "we'll see what she's up for today."
Here's what that actually looks like in practice:
I follow the dog's lead, completely.
I'm not going to ask a 14-year-old to do action shots. But if you set down her leash and she takes off at an adorably slow pace? I'm going to be right there capturing every step of it. Those moments are just as beautiful - sometimes more so.
The session is still a good time.
Senior or not, the experience should feel relaxed and joyful. We're giving your dog a lovely outing. Treats, gentle exploration, favorite spots. The photos come from that - from real moments, not posed ones.
What you receive should feel like a treasure.
A printed album. A wall portrait. Something you can actually hold and return to - not a file buried in your phone. Because a photograph on a screen fades into the scroll. A photograph on your wall becomes part of your daily life.

Why This Is Worth Doing Now
If your dog is aging, or you've been putting off a session because "we'll get around to it," I want to gently say: this is the moment to book it.
The dogs in our lives are family. If you'd hang a portrait of your kids on the wall, why not your dog? Especially when, for so many of us, they are our kids.
I've been covered in slobber and fur. I've braved snowstorms. I've gotten down in the mud to get the right angle. All of it is worth it, every single time, because those images outlast everything else. They're what's left when a dog is gone, and they're what makes someone smile - really smile - every single day while their pup is still here.
