There’s something perfectly imperfect about photographing dogs. Maybe it’s the way their tails never quite stop wagging, or the way they dive nose-first into the sand the second you turn your back. That chaos? That’s the magic.
If you're anything like me (and I think you might be, since you're here), then your dog isn’t just a pet. They're your sidekick, your cuddle partner, your reason for smiling on a tough day. And you’re probably looking for more than just a quick phone snap. You want to capture something real, something lasting. The kind of photo that pulls at your heart every time you walk past it hanging on your wall.
Over the years here on the Outer Banks, I’ve climbed the dunes and waded through the sound looking for spots where both dogs and humans can relax and be themselves. So today, I’m sharing some of my favorite dog-friendly locations that are not just scenic, but work for real, soulful dog portraits.
What Makes a Location “Photo Session Worthy”?
Sure, most beaches look nice in vacation photos, but not all of them are practical (or peaceful) when you’re trying to focus a camera on a wiggly dog while avoiding a frisbee to the face.
When I scout spots for sessions, I look for a few key things:
-Light that flatters both fur and humans (hello, golden hour!)Open space for movement, but not so much that you lose the dog to the horizon
-Fewer crowds or distractions to help pups stay calm and focused
-Natural elements like dunes, grasses, or water that add visual depth without overwhelming the subject
With that in mind, here are a few of my all-time favorite OBX spots for capturing that timeless connection between you and your pup.
Jockey’s Ridge Soundside - Soft Light and Splashes
If I had to name a favorite, this might be it.
The soundside of Jockey's Ridge offers incredible lighting both at sunrise and sunset. You get that dreamy, golden hue without the harsh heat or bustling beach crowds. One evening I met up with a Rottweiler named Moses, and let me tell you, that session was unforgettable. Not only did I get one of my favorite silhouette shots of all time, but we also learned Moses loved getting into the water. As we were shooting near the water he just kept wandering right on in, made for some great photos! Total win-win: we beat the heat, got amazing pics and Moses got his splash on.
It’s quieter here too, especially early or and even late in the day (sunset watching crowds tend to stay at the top and don’t venture down to the water). The sand cools as the sun sets, and if your dog’s the kind who perks up at every bark in the distance, this peaceful setting can really help them stay comfortable and relaxed.

Kitty Hawk Boat Ramp - Hidden Gem
Absolutely a favorite location.
It doesn’t make the tourist postcards, but the sea grasses in the distance, calm water, and open sky create an ideal space for quiet, soulful portraits. Especially early in the morning, before the world gets going, it’s peacefully still and gloriously golden. I’ve had some of the most gentle, heartwarming sessions here with dogs who weren’t fans of sand in their noses or waves chasing their paws.
Plus, it’s a great off-leash space so if your dog can’t safely be off-leash in big open spaces but in a more limited area has a better recall, we have plenty of ways to make the environment feel open and natural.

Dowdy Park - Color, Texture, and Plenty of Wiggle Room
Now, if you're someone who wants a bit of personality in your photos - or if your pup thrives in playful, community spaces - I absolutely love Dowdy Park. It’s especially great for morning shoots before it gets busy.
There’s room to sniff and explore, and often we get to play with layered textures like unique playground pieces, a wide field, or urban-ish elements that give a totally different look than the usual beach photo. If your dog has a silly streak and you love vibrant, personality-packed portraits, this park always delivers.
It’s also a good spot if you're worried that your dog won’t cooperate on command. I’m not here to ask for a perfect sit on a stump. If they don’t want to pose, no problem. We’ll pivot, play, or take a snack break. Dowdy gives us so much space to experiment without pressure.

Bonus Advice for Outdoor Dog Sessions
Here’s something I always tell my clients before we meet in any outdoor location:
If possible, bring your dog in the smallest collar or harness you feel comfortable using in public.
A simple collar (without a bulky harness or vest) can make a big difference in how clean and timeless your final image feels. But of course, safety always comes first. Never at the expense of your dog’s well-being.
And most importantly? This whole thing is about your dog. We’ll take breaks, we’ll play, we’ll roll with whatever mood your pup is in. If they don’t want to sit on a big stone turtle - no big deal. Some of the best portraits come when you let the session unfold naturally instead of trying to force perfection.

It’s Not Just About the Location. It’s About the Connection.
The Outer Banks gives us beautiful light, wild winds, and soft sand - but honestly, what makes a photo unforgettable is you and your dog being yourselves.
That real love, that silliness, that deep bond that feels impossible to put into words? That’s what I’m always trying to capture.
So wherever we go - from wide open beach to cozy trail - we’ll choose the place that suits your dog’s spirit best. Every dog deserves to be seen for who they are and remembered through art that tells their story.
If your dog is your heart in fur form, and you’re ready to finally have photographs that bring everything you feel into view - let’s make it happen.
